The city what it is today is a conglomerate of formerly independent cities of Velbert, Neviges and Lagenberg and the merge happened in 1975. The administrative area of Velbert is divided into three regions reflecting the three former cities such as Velbert-Mitte, Lagenberg and Neviges. The countryside of Velbert is extremely picturesque and it includes the suburbs of Losenburg, Nordpark, Langenhost, Birth and Hefel.

Constructed in the year 2003, Velbert’s S-Bahn connection route S-9 has been a very attractive alternative to the commuters. However, the old town of Velbert has no rail connection and some of the earlier stations have been transformed into nice, cozy restaurants and cafes.
Velbert’s economy initially survived with small manufacturing industries mostly metal based and the typical products include small tools, hinges and locks. Most companies of Velbert are small to medium sized and mostly evolve from backyard forges. There are several small industrial units that manufacture automotive parts too. However, today tourism at Velbert is picking up, as the city is very well connected by trams and the rail network.
Velbert is a smaller city with only smaller interest for museum lovers and theater lovers. People that love history, though will love medieval style Velbert Langenberg that speaks about the glorious past of this little town. One of the very popular tourist spots at Velbert is the Golfclub that is popularly known as Velbert-Gut Kuhlendahl.
German engineering is a thing to see and the town has small tool manufacturing and automotive parts manufacturing units. The world famous Sebo company manufacturing the vacuum cleaners is based in this city.
