www.mygreatworld.com - 'Kaiserpfalz' Dusseldorf first started around the seventh century as a small fishing town along the Rhine River. This marshy land was first known as Dusseldorf in 1135. In 1186, Dusseldorf was taken over by the Berg. The Battle of Worringen; however, led to Dusseldorf’s independence. The Archbishop of Cologne and the Berg were fighting over the city of Dusseldorf. The Berg wiped out the Archbishop of Cologne’s army. A war won by the citizens of Dusseldorf and Cologne freed the settlement. It was on August 14th of 1288 that Dusseldorf was granted its city rights by Count Adolf V of Berg. There is a monument of witness that stands today in Burgplatz.

It is said that the cartwheel came from the children of Dusseldorf for the flips they did in celebration of their cities win. Even in the 21st century there is still a rivalry between Cologne and Dusseldorf.

In the eighteenth century Dusseldorf was on it’s way to growing into an economic empire. Johann Wilhelm II from 1690-1716 helped the capital flourish by getting the help of his wife to design a large collection of paintings and sculptures to be on display in the city castle. Art and architecture flourished during this period and it is often referred as the Golden Age of Dusseldorf in the historical records of today. It is the second most important art market in the country.

In the 19th century, Dusseldorf got a push into the Industrial Revolution and the population rose. There were over one hundred thousand people in Dusseldorf by 1882 and 10 years down the line the population doubled. Later the World Wars took a large toll on Dusseldorf with constant bombings almost destroying the city. In 1946, Dusseldorf was proclaimed the capital of North Rhine – Westphalia.
