Darmstadt
Darmstadt is a city with about 140.000 inhabitans. Historically the residence of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1918 it became the capital of the Republic of Hesse. Following nearly complete destruction of the inner city in the second world war, Darmstadt lost this function.
Today Darmstadt is a city of science, commerce an the arts. Esoc and GSI are also in Darmstadt, as Frauenhofer Institutes. At the Mathilda Heights there was the beginning of Arts & Crafts in Germany. Darmstadt calls itself a city in which the arts live. Since 1975 Darmstadt bears the title 'City of European'.
In Darmstadt you find some old and some new. A lot of parks and gardens. Around the city are woods and from here you can start your trip to 'Bergstraße' and 'Odenwald'. Darmstadt is worthseeing, you just have to look.
